Leaving my comfort zone

In June of 2010 I was seventeen years old and had just graduated high school. A week later I would be on my way to Manteo, N.C. To stay with my aunt and uncle. My uncle worked for a vacation house rental agency down in the Outer Banks. He helped me in getting my first job, which was cleaning beach houses in Corolla.

It was the first time I would be away from home for a longer period. My aunt knew some of the personal struggles I had been going through over the years. She thought it would be a great opportunity to help me grow, and it really was. It was a big step for me to take and I was scared to be away from home, but the experience taught me a lot.

One of my favorite parts about it was getting to spend time with my family. I got to hear story’s about my grandfather/grandmother, my aunts and uncles, my dad and everyone else. I also got to get close to my cousins who had come down and visited. It was an experience I will never forget. I couldn’t even put into words to express the gratitude I have for the opportunity they gave to me.

I tell people about that experience all the time. I grew as a person, it taught me responsibility and gave me a connection to my family. I learned it’s okay to leave that comfort zone. As trying as it was at times emotionally, it will always be one my greatest memories.
